A missionary life…

by | Oct 2, 2015 | Missions Articles

I am sitting here in Des Moines at the econolodge, and my mind is spinning. College shootings, suicides of the children of people I grew up with. Jesus, what’s going on? I look in the mirror behind my computer, my hair is dishevealed, my lips bleeding and cracked from the 53 mile, 8 day Colorado trail hike I did from Lake City Colorado to Silverton. The one littered with golden aspens, rain/sleet, epic views, wild strawberries, freezing alpine lakes on the edge of granite mountains.

Im sure you want to hear some good news. What can I say? The longer I live, the more I see that there is no good news apart from Jesus.

“Get off your soap box” I can hear it now, but this battle we fight is beyond our physical capacity, its against the powers and principlities of this dark world, but light, pure, sweet glorious light penatrates the deepest darkness. Cling to the light…we cannot blame the darkness for being dark when it’s the absence of light.

This is more then I bargined for. God help us, teach us, grow us. I remember Misty Edwards saying that it wasn’t the young, zealous Christians that made her stand in awe, but the 80 year olds, the 90 year olds who fought the good fight, and were still pressing on. We should grow more hopeful and in love as the years progress, let the seeds of the Kingdom increase. We are not fighting for victory, but from victory!

Setp 15th found me working 50-55 hours a week doing trail guides, riding in the Medora Musical, and sunday services with two other college fellas with Christian Ministry in the national park. I headed to Custer State Park after that for a refreshing visit with a couple who manage the trail rides down there and are a light of hope and encouragement to the lodge workers. I spent a few days in Franktown, hiking and catching up with some other friends of mine who will be joining me in Nepal mid October, and then spent 8 days on the Colorado trail preparing for the altitude and strain of backpacking in Nepal. The aspen trees are some of the most incredible folige I have ever seen. It’s like their golden leaves exude light. Amazing.

I swung by the prayer house in Kansas City for a refreshing time of worship, and  caught up with some of my good friends, inclduing my best friend from 5th grade who works as a CSI agent/college student, I gave her a 10 minute update from my life which left her head spinning Im sure. (BTW big city traffic, road construction and malfunctioning gps systems are not condusive to my kind of peaceful living)

I caught a hotel room last night, just to have one more night of owning my life before I hit the ground runnin in Nepal. I’m leaving Sunday night from Chicago, and arriving tuesday morning.

I did laundry yesterday at a laundry mat, and had some divine encounters. I was cleaning out the back of my truck, which contains everything but the kitchen sink, and this gal named Marylin came over and we started talking. I ended up giving her some stuff, and praying with her for her hair salon. It was kinda in the hood, and these two kiddos were playing with the light that streamed in through the open laundry mat door. I found a spider stole away in one of my boxes, and it made their day to see him crawl on my hand…. I got to pour out some love to the kiddos and their mama, and felt the pleasure and the joy of the Lord!

You dont have to look too far to find the mission field!

Well, I got to go meet with a friend who is driving two hours down from Minnesota to drop off some shoes for the kiddos in Nepal. Pray for protection….trust…vision and deeper intimacy with Jesus, as I learn to live in and carry His Presance more and more. Thanks all, be blessed.

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
