Explosive Growth in Modern Day!

by | Oct 2, 2014 | Missions Articles

Greetings from Oakland, CA! I am here with Lou Engle and TheCall on a 40-day period of fasting and praying believing for revival for America and the birth of a new student missions movement. When Modern Day was birthed in the summer of 2008, it was looking to a new Student Volunteer Movement that 100 years ago sent 20,000 college age students to the nations.  He has done it before and He can do it again!

Modern Day Field Worker Update

Over the past couple of years, Modern Day has begun to encounter explosive growth.  We began 2013 with 55 field workers and have expanded to 151 field workers serving in 37 countries around the world! While 2013 was the year of partnerships with Gateway Church and TheCall, 2014 has been a year of field workers added one by one. Just in the past four months we have added 24 new field workers! Since our humble beginnings in 2008, we have now facilitated 192 field workers in 42 countries. We’ve come a long way from our first year where 14 donations in a month were enough to set a record.

As the number of field workers continues to grow, so have our donations.  In 2013, we had just under $1,000,000 in donations that was a 89% growth over 2012. In 2014, Modern Day has for the first time surpassed the million-dollar mark that represents a 59% growth over 2013.  Since our inception, Modern Day has raised over $3,000,000 for missions both in America and across the world.

What are our Pockets of Field Workers?

The majority of our field workers are independent and spread out across the world. However, we do have a few concentrations of field workers:

  • Former Shady Grove Church, Grand Prairie, TX (51 FW): Astonishingly, the tradition that Shady Grove Church has raised up and released missionaries lives on!  Shady Grove Church merged into Gateway Church and was asked to administrate the final missions conference. Through the annual Building Bridges Missions Conference, Modern Day is helping to keep the tradition going.
  • TheCall/Pasadena International House of Prayer, Pasadena, CA (19 FW):  Under the direction of Lou Engle and Cheryl Allen, TheCall and Pihop are leading the charge of intercession both locally and for the unreached peoples of the world.
  • Tyler, TX (19 FW):  Home of Marvin Slaton, Modern Day Director, Tyler has become a growing source of field workers. Thanks to the influence of ministries like YWAM – Tyler and Teen Mania, the area is full of young people eager to reach the nations.
  • Peru (15):  Beginning with one of our first field workers, the Wissmans, the word has spread across the country. We are now partnering with workers at one of the largest churches in Peru, Camino de Vida.
  • Shores of Grace, Brazil (11 FW):  Under the direction of Nic Billman, Shores of Grace reaches out to the prostitutes of Recife, Brazil.

What’s coming up in the Coming Year?

As Modern Day continues to expand, so do the challenges of operating a growing ministry. The staff of Modern Day consists of a part time president, a full-time director, a part-time finance manager and a part-time donor relations person. We have built a streamlined system that enables this limited staff to handle the growing number of field workers.  Our major challenge that we are bumping into is the constraints of established off the shelf software. In general, software builders aren’t thinking of hundreds of missionaries as they design their software. I am sensing the pressing need to build a web-based software that will be able to:

  • Accept donations for thousands of field workers
  • Produce user-friendly reports that field workers can understand
  • Provide a forum for field workers to communicate with their donors and friends.

A main focus of mine over the coming year will be to spearhead the development of this software.  Would you prayerfully consider making a contribution towards the development of this software (click to donate to Modern Day General)?

A second major initiative is the upcoming Building Bridges Virtual Missions Conference.  On the heels of last year’s highly successful Building Bridges Missions Conference, we are following it up with a virtual version beginning in November.  Aimed at Dallas area residents, Building Bridges will enable a person to make one commitment for 2015 that will help any number of the over 50 field workers connected to the former Shady Grove. More information will be coming soon to the DFW Building Bridges email list.

I am so grateful for your prayers and financial support for the Modern Day field workers.  With out support from people like you, it would be impossible for them to reach this lost and hurting world. If you have not had the opportunity to look at our new website please do (www.modernday.org). We have seen a sizeable increase in traffic particularly from mobile users.  May the Lord continue to bless you in all that you do!

Blessings,

Elias Reyes
President, Modern Day Missions

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
