Favela Ministry

by | Mar 18, 2015 | Missions Articles

Yesterday when the team was ministering in the favela, they were invited into a home unfamiliar to them. The woman that invited them said “please pray for my pregnant daughter.” Luke Billman and 5 other people went inside and prayed over her. There were 5 other people staying in the home and the team was able to pray with all of them. By the time they were done the pregnant woman was in tears. She was so touched by the power of God it was absolutely beautiful. Her husband spoke up and said “I wish we knew how to pray so we could bless you before you leave.” Jaqueline (one of the women on the Shores team) told him “just talk like God is standing in front of you and ask Him to bless us in whatever way you like.” The gentleman said “Father, thank you for these people that left their countries to come here. Thank you that they were here to bless our baby today. Thank you that Recife is important enough that you would ask them to come.” Direct. Simple. Beautiful.

Luke was overcome with gratitude that God saw this team as an integral part of His kingdom in Recife. That He would use a man that had never prayed in his life to convey how special what they are doing is. Luke shares: “So often, no matter where we are in life its easy to slip into normalcy and see things as insignificant. I was in that place. And God used 3 simple sentences to show me how significant what we do on a daily basis is. Thank you, Father!”

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
