Inspiring story of Lu Xian

by | Mar 25, 2016 | Missions Articles

I believe God makes all things beautiful and every life has purpose!   I remember the first time I looked at Lu Xian, it was just a small picture taken on a phone of his very blue face.   After seeing his picture I simply fell in love, and I wanted him to come to our home.   However, as a leadership team we had to pray and seek Father for guidance. Lu Xian was born with a very severe heart condition and after many failed surgeries he was fighting to live, he would need 24/ 7medical care. It was decided that our home would care for Lu Xian; we were warned that he would not live, but this was a chance we were all willing to take. After a long train ride he arrived at our home gasping for air and fighting to survive. Immediately, our nurse accessed him and provided him with an oxygen tank. His face started to become more pink and breathing became easier and easier.   Our staff would not leave his side; someone would stay with him day and night.

Days turned into months and Lu Xian seemed to be getting better and better, he no longer needed oxygen at all times and was able to sleep with the other children in a bedroom. I would often visit Lu Xian and teach him sign language. He was always full of joy and could make anyone smile. Lu Xian loved to take selfies using my phone and enjoyed looking at all my pictures of the children. Then suddenly one day Lu Xian began to run a high fever, and it didn’t seem to go down with any medicine. Immediately everyone was concerned!   After a few days he wouldn’t eat and was given a tube for feedings. He could no longer sit up, as he would be short of breath, but his smile never left his adorable face.   He would still greet you by waving his hand as you walked into the room.   We all fought for Lu Xian, we prayed and fasted, thanking God for his life. Lu Xian’s life was valuable and we would do all we could to keep him alive. I took many night shifts just watching to make sure he was breathing. Each night I would administer an exact amount of medicine through his tube. Those nights were sleepless nights, as I lay awake watching him breath slowly, praying and worshipping, hoping for a miracle.   I believed for a miracle, I knew that if Jesus could be raised from the dead nothing was impossible!

I will never forget the phone call at 2:30am from a friend “He’s not breathing” she said and my reply was “Okay, I’ll be right over.” I knew there wasn’t much I could do, but I wanted to be by his side and I wanted to calm her fears too. Together we lie on the floor with Lu Xian praying and crying. His breathing was slower and slower. He stopped struggling at 9:00am, his little body lifeless, but full of peace. As our leader took off all his tubes she thanked Jesus for freedom, freedom from tubes, medicines, and struggling. Together we thanked Jesus for life after death, eternal life that only comes from Jesus. The verse that came to my mind was Psalm 23 :4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Lu Xian was not fearful; he knew He was going to be with His maker. In the grief filled moment of watching Lu Xian take his last breath, I knew God had to be my comfort. I could choose to be filled with questions and doubt, or hold onto hope . I will still pray with great passion for all my children to be healed, but if death comes I will grieve with hope because I know life comes after death, and one day I will join Lu Xian. Lu Xian’s life had such great purpose, and although he fought hard in this life, he had great joy. Lu Xian helped teach me to rejoice in ALL circumstances, to love without boundaries, and to live without fear!

My name is Winnie Moyer and I’ve been a volunteer at Hidden Treasures Foster Home in China for three years.  Here at Hidden Treasures we care for special needs orphans, but in our home they are no longer orphans because our amazing heavenly Father has already adopted them. We not only provide medical care, but the children attend school specifically tailored to their individual needs.  I have become the director of the school and take great joy in training many new teachers how to teach our special treasures.

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
