Julia’s Story

by | Mar 18, 2015 | Missions Articles

Recently it was decided by the judge over our jurisdiction that one of our girls would be moved to the jurisdiction of the court in her home city, about an hour from us.  We were very sad because in the 10 months that she was with us at Betania we saw such growth and transformation. She came to us with HIV and was recently declared healed by 2 different doctors. We tried to fight the move but the decision to transfer her was out of our hands. She was heartbroken and felt abandoned once again.

Last week Rachael, Aline (our staff psychologist) and I (Nic) went to visit her at her new shelter. Her smile immediately welcomed us in. The shelter she is at is a government shelter, extremely different than what she had grown accustomed to at Bethany.  She shared that each morning she wakes up, puts on worship music, reads the bible and prays. Many of the other children from the house now join her in that and she prays for them and shares testimony of all that God has done in her life. At night she prays with all of the other girls.  One night she forgot and a girl who is not yet a Christian said, “hey aren’t you going to pray for us?!”.  She has even prayed for some of the workers in the house when they have felt stressed and tired. She is one girl transforming the atmosphere of that government shelter. It is so amazing to see that even when things are out of our hands they are never out of His! Please pray for continued passion and persistence for Julia and that much fruit would come from her testimony!

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
