God Did Make a Way!

by | Feb 14, 2018 | Missions Articles

In the last few months, some team members and I started a friendship with a young mother who had been on the avenue prostituting because she was without a job, without help, and without hope. In October, she decided to accept our offer for coffee and conversation. In November, some team members and I visited her in her home. It was this day she boldly declared to us that she had decided not to return to the avenue or to ‘that life’, even if she had no way of feeding her two boys or paying her rent. She was two months behind on rent and the owner of the house was outside waiting for us to leave so he could enter and collect his due. This girl believed God would make a way somehow…

God did make a way!

While this girl was sharing her story with us, God was speaking to one of our team members to give away his expensive new watch as collateral. None of us knew until he presented the idea to the girl who immediately began to cry. She hesitantly accepted his offer and next thing we knew the owner of the house was sitting in our company on the floor agreeing to extend the date of her rent again, trusting that these 3 strangers would actually keep their end of the bargain on our friend’s behalf. We had 10 days to complete our deal which was to pay for the two late months of rent and the current third month, in full. You want to know what happened, right?

Within those ten days, a married couple had heard me share the testimony of what God was doing in this girl’s life and they were compelled to help. On two different occasions they offered to pay for her rent, if our staff member wanted to keep his watch. After seeking the Lord, the owner of the watch accepted their offer believing this was God wanting to bless his test of obedience; that he would be willing even to sell his new watch if God asked. After meeting with the couple, they paid for the three months rent and one extra to give this girl more time to search for a job without pressure. We made the deposit, and about a week later, she messaged me to say she was offered a job with a family friend. On top of that, she didn’t have to pay someone to watch her boys! Since then, she was offered another, better temporary job! While currently working this short term job, she is also preparing to take a test with a company for a full time, salaried position. She and I have been rejoicing and laughing about how faithful God is!

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
