Missionary Internship – Gutierrez Family

by | May 31, 2016 | Missions Articles

One of the most exciting thing about the mission field are all the real life stories. Stories of people coming to faith, children being rescued, communities experiencing supernatural heart healing from traumatic pasts, and new generations being inspired to believe the best is yet to come.

So many of those stories we hear come from some place “over there.” Most seemed linked to geography that’s hard to pronounce or places that are far away. And yet, being a missionary myself, the missions stories that seemed to have captured my imagination are beginning in places that are easily found on a map; Oklahoma, Florida, Alabama, Illinois, Minnesota. Places where the Spirit of God is moving on the hearts of young people and stirring them to ask the question of themselves; Am I called? Is the Lord leading me to become a missionary?

Last year we had the honor of launching the Missionary Internship for Camino de Vida in Lima, Peru. Our pastors, Robert and Karyn Barriger, are missionaries who have always had it on their hears to help activate young people in missions. Through their church they hosts dozens of mission teams each year knowing that the exposure to the stories of what God is doing in places like Peru changes people’s perspective of church and Kingdom. Beyond that they always hope that experiences like those lived on mission trips will awaken in those God is calling to “go” a desire to pursue what that means.

The missionary internship is a bridge between a mission trip and the potential of what it might look like to live as a missionary. The 5 month experience is designed to create a space where young people can seek God and get clarity on their calling, all within the context of the local church. And the stories we have seen unfold are amazing. We have already seen a young lady move to the field, with three others working to raise their support to go and begin their adventures in God. And the stories all point to God’s faithfulness and his big plans for the future. What excites me most is the caliber of people that have come and that are now going. Young people loaded up with talents and giant hearts for people and a deep desire to serve the church.

It has been such a privilege to witness the start of missions activations like the ones we are seeing. We know God will use these willing young people in amazing ways. In fact, he already is!

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
