Young, Single, and Sent [to the Mission Field] with Mark Phillips, Sierra Lee, Natan Marcal

Season 9:

Episode 18

Do you ever feel like you’re falling behind? Like everyone around you is buying houses, getting married, having kids, and finding a career while you’re out here saying yes to the calling? You’re not mad about it…sometimes, you just wonder. What are you up to, God?

In this episode, three single missionaries in their 20’s and 30’s, Mark, Natan, and Sierra, open up about things rarely talked about that single missionaries deal with and think about on a regular basis. Things like: the significant challenge of finding a spouse on the field, assumptions married teammates have that singleness means extra time and extra capacity, and the deep search for “home.”

We also have a ton of fun in this episode, and there are some fantastic wisdom bombs that get dropped by the crew as well that will help you see things in a new light. This episode is a real look at what it takes to build a whole life on the field right now, right where you are at. Listen to the full episode and find links to connect with our guests below.

In This Episode, You’ll Learn

  • Why singleness on the field often gets read as extra capacity instead of a full life on its own, and how to set healthy boundaries around it.
  • How three missionaries wrestle with the specific grief of watching the odds of marriage shrink, without losing hope or shutting their hearts down.
  • What it means to search for home when your address keeps changing, and where lasting groundedness comes from.

Podcast Guests

Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips serves with YWAM in Kona, Hawaii, where he’s currently studying in the School of Biblical Studies. He has a deep passion to witness to and serve Pacific Islanders, and feels called to missions throughout the South Pacific region, committed to sharing the gospel, discipling believers, and helping advance the Great Commission among the Pacific Islands.

Sierra Lee

Sierra grew up as a ministry kid in Bellingham, Washington, at a Christian summer camp for kids that her parents ran. At 18, she did her DTS in Kona, Hawaii, then spent three years in ministry back in her hometown before following a call to full-time missions. She staffed the Discipleship Training School with YWAM Lakeside in Montana for five years, then moved to Kona to staff the School of Biblical Studies and the Titus Project for another five. All together, she’s been in full-time missions for a decade.

Natan Marcal

Natan Marcal is 27, born and raised in Brazil before moving to New Hampshire as a kid. Since 2022 he’s been on staff with YWAM’s Discipleship Training School in Kona, with outreach that took him to Papua New Guinea and, this year, back to Brazil on a missions trip of his own. Outside of ministry, he loves to cook, hang out with friends, and travel to get to know new cultures and people.
