How Can I Know if I’m Called to Be a Missionary?

by Marvin Slaton | May 13, 2025

Have you ever caught yourself wondering, “Am I really called to missions?” Maybe you’ve felt a tug on your heart during worship, read a Scripture that wouldn’t let you go, or had a moment where it felt like God whispered something about the nations to you.

But how do you know? How do any of us know?

Maybe a friend asked you recently, “How did you know you were called to be a missionary?” and you stumbled trying to explain something that’s deeply spiritual yet hard to put into words. Maybe someone shared this article with you because you’ve been asking those very questions.

If that’s you, welcome. You’re in good company.

This question—Am I called to missions?—is one many of us have asked and wrestled with. And it’s one we continue to walk out. Because calling isn’t a static moment; it’s a journey we live.

So how do we begin discerning it?

1. What Is God Saying?

The foundation of any missionary calling begins here: What is God saying?

We listen through the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and a multitude of counsel. Each of these acts like a compass, and they work together in unity.

  • The Word of God is our grounding place. Scripture doesn’t just speak broadly about missions—it often speaks directly to us in personal ways in different seasons. Ask: What is God highlighting to me in His Word right now?
  • The Holy Spirit lives in us and leads us. That still, small voice matters. Maybe for you, it’s been a persistent desire, a phrase that keeps appearing in your journal or a recurring dream.

  • And then there’s the multitude of counsel—mentors, pastors, friends, and leaders who love you and hear from God too. When the calling is real, these voices will often say, “Yes, we see it too.”

There’s a beautiful symmetry when all three align. If one of these pieces is missing, we pause. We listen again. We don’t barrel ahead.

2. Calling or Burden?

Here’s where many of us get tripped up: confusing a burden with a calling.

  • A burden is often born from a revelation of need. You see injustice, and it moves you. You want to help. It’s powerful—and from the Lord. But burdens can shift with time. A burden won’t cause you to completely change your life as a result, but it can propel you into beautiful action.

  • A calling is comprehensive. It includes your marriage, family, finances, relationships, and long-term direction. And while a calling always includes a burden, a burden doesn’t necessarily mean a calling.

A calling has a burden, but a burden doesn’t always have a calling.

When we mistake a burden for a calling and go on the field, we can end up becoming a burden to those already serving there. But when we discern rightly, both callings and burdens can be walked out in powerful, God-honoring ways.

3. What Happens If We Ignore It?

Let’s be real. There are costs to ignoring both a calling and a burden.

If we ignore a true calling, we risk running from God’s best for our lives. Like Jonah, we may find ourselves on a wayward road, swallowed up in confusion or darkness, until we return to what God asked of us.

If we ignore a burden, we risk disconnecting from the very thing God placed in us to help fuel His mission on earth. And we also risk forgetting how vital burden-bearers are. Every missionary on the field can point to people who stayed behind—but prayed, gave, served, and sent.

Burdens, walked out faithfully, keep missionaries on the field.

So we ask: Lord, what are You stirring in me? A call to go? A call to send? Both?

4. Walking It Out in a Healthy Way

If you’re sensing a burden, here’s a healthy way to respond:

  • Pray – regularly, fervently, with intentionality.

  • Serve – find tangible ways to support missions stateside.

  • Give – finances fuel missions. Your generosity matters.

  • Go – take a short-term trip. Get exposure. Let God refine and clarify your burden.

If you’re sensing a calling, here are four “C’s” for a healthy journey:

  • Christ – He is your anchor. You must stay rooted in Him above all.

  • Commitment – Calling is long-term. Let God continually reaffirm and refresh it in you.

  • Covering – Don’t go alone. Submit to spiritual authority. Be sent well.

  • Community – Life in missions is hard. You need people walking alongside you—both at home and on the field.

Short-term trips are especially helpful in this phase. They give you a taste of real missionary life. You’ll quickly discover what makes you come alive—and what doesn’t.

5. So… Are You Called?

Here’s what we know: if you’re even asking this question, God is up to something in your heart.

Whether you’re feeling a call or a burden, don’t rush it.

Sit with it. Process it with others. Take the next step. You don’t need to know the full plan—you just need to take that first faithful step of discernment.

And remember: this world doesn’t just need more missionaries. It needs people who are fully alive in Christ. People who carry burdens with integrity. People who walk in calling with joy. People like you.
