Raising Support One Sip At A Time

By Amber McMillan

I would prefer a perfect cup of tea over a cup of brew any day. Which is why if you were to ask me how I found myself at Starbucks, I would be without reply. But if you asked me how I managed to stay at Starbucks, I could sum it up in one word…People! It ranges from the group of laughing old men reminiscing the good ole days, to the sophisticated business men and women carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. I have meet, seen, and built relationships with many faces. However, I never thought these relationships would carry over into the mission field.

About Three years ago I heard the Lord calling me to be a full time missionary. Unaware of how to make missions a possibility, I continued leaning on Starbucks for financial security. I only had willingness to quit and do what He asked, after He spoon fed me support. Praise the Lord in His wisdom and kindness He guides even the stubbornest of mauls. The Lord challenged me to a leap of faith. It was time to do things His way. Unsure of how I was going to make ends meet, I decided to quit my job and aboard ship as a full time missionary with YWAM Tyler. It wasn’t until I announced my two weeks notice that I realized how strategic God is in everything. Never once did I have to ask for sponsors. God knew relationships there would carry me over into missions here.

People started coming to me asking what I was doing with eagerness to be involved. I am a woman of few tears, but overwhelmed with awe and overtaken in generosity my eyes became rivers. God used what was holding me back, and when I finally gave it up, turned around and used it to move me forward. My wonderful Starbucks customers now account for over half my support. Which goes to show that no matter what you do you have impact! That impact can take you to places you never thought possible. With each “good morning” and “how are you doing today” I was investing in partners and didn’t even know it. I hope this challenges you to unbox God and encourages you to fresh ways God might bring provision.

Why is it Important to be Resilient?

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
