The Good News in Wal-Mart!

by | Jun 23, 2014 | Missions Articles

I recently bought a one way ticket to Nepal, where there still are many unreached people groups in the mountains, but today I was in Walmart, looking to get my oil changed. There she sat, heavy with the weight of regret, she was the mission field, in her golden hoop earrings and thick eyes shadow. Her red lipstick punctuated the frown on her face. She looked exhausted, but not the kind that you could remedy with a good nights rest. It was like a storm cloud.

I ask her name, and we shake hands. ‘I’m a Christian and sometimes God shows me stuff about people,” I begin. This is a strange conversation to be having in the Walmart auto center, but she’s listening intently. I share a specific Word that God gave to me, I can’t remember all of it, but I do recall that when I prayed, the Holy Spirit came, and she cried. A burden was lifted from her soul as she took her first step in the right direction, towards Jesus.

Her husband had been working on the oil fields, but lost his job. They were from Mexico originally, lost, broken, living in a trailer with no running water, or electricity. Four children. You know the story, the one that makes you say, “Jesus! Help!”
We exchanged numbers. That was a month ago. Since then they have started attending a local church here, connecting with the local body of Christ.

We are called to take the Gospel to all nations, it starts right where you are. When we stop for the One who made us, He gives us what we need so that we can stop for the ones in front of us. In August I will go to Nepal, and partner with local believers sharing the Gospel with a nation still steeped in Hinduism. The local believers are building a school so that the children of the families following Hinduism still can get educated as well as hear the Gospel. I am excited to join them and minister with them, learning what love looks like!

I know that the mission field starts wherever I am, and as I minister in my own home nation, it prepares me to love and minister to all nations. Each person is precious and valuable to God, and we are the ambassadors of His Kingdom!

The facts are only sometimes representative of reality, and there’s more to the story than we see. It’s powerful when we tune in to that compass bearing, look to God to help us create a complete picture of reality, and not just say, “Truth is whatever my sense is, but Lord, tell me the facts and the greater vantage point.”

Navigating the Pain of Change and Disappointment

That was the order we were given within minutes of discovering our residencies had been denied renewal. The city hall official was not hostile or aggressive, simply delivering orders. I responded that we would “absolutely not be leaving in thirty days.” She mentioned they would send a police officer to our door if we did not comply. I told her she could send the king; I still would not leave after thirty days. That was impossible!
